Rooftop terrace at Rockside Villa with a plunge pool looking over Emporio to the Aegean

Emporio · Santorini · Greece

Carved into the rock

A renovated Cycladic house inside the old castle village. Sleeps four. The roof is yours.

Scroll

Most of Santorini is a queue. Emporio is the part that stayed quiet: a walled castle village of white lanes, seven hundred years old, twenty minutes from the noise. Rockside sits inside it, cut into the volcanic rock, with a roof that looks all the way to the sea.

Whitewashed private courtyard with a shaded table and the front door open
Vaulted white living room with terracotta floor and an orange retro fridge
Arched alcove windows above a built-in daybed in the sleeping room
Rain shower under a round skylight in a bathroom carved from raw volcanic stone
Private rooftop hot tub, sun loungers and the bell tower of Emporio beyond
01

The courtyard

You do not arrive at a lobby. You arrive at your own white courtyard, off a lane too narrow for cars.

02

The vault

Inside, the ceiling curves. Lime plaster, terracotta floor, and one very orange fridge that nobody wants us to change.

03

The rooms

Arched windows set deep into a metre of wall. It stays cool in August without trying.

04

The cave

The bathroom was not built. It was dug. Raw rock overhead, one round skylight, rain falling through it.

05

The roof

Then the stairs open out and the whole island is there. Hot tub, two loungers, the bell tower, the Aegean.

Polished dark stone washbasin and round rope mirror in the cave bathroom

The material

Stone that was already here

Nothing was clad to look old. The dark surfaces are the volcanic rock the house was cut out of, sealed and polished by hand.

Compact white kitchen with an oven, a coffee machine and a built-in daybed

The practical part

A house, not a hotel room

Full kitchen, oven, proper coffee. The village bakery is a two minute walk, so most people end up cooking once and eating out the rest.
